This is the boring guide. It's also the one that makes your toys last twice as long and prevents the kind of infections nobody wants to call their doctor about. Knowing how to clean sex toys properly matters far more than most first-time buyers realise.
If you only read one section, read the storage one — Indian humidity is the silent killer of intimate devices.
Why cleaning matters
Your body has bacteria. Normal. What's not normal is incubating those bacteria on a damp toy between uses. Vaginal infections, UTIs, and skin irritation almost always trace back to dirty toys or shared toys used without care.
A toy you can't be bothered to clean is one you're better off not owning.
The basic clean — every single use
For toys in body-safe silicone, ABS plastic, or stainless steel:
- Rinse under warm (not hot) running water immediately after use.
- Apply a small amount of unscented mild soap or a dedicated toy cleaner.
- Wash gently, paying attention to seams, button areas, and the base where the body meets the handle.
- Rinse thoroughly until no soap residue remains.
- Pat dry with a clean towel.
- Let air-dry fully before storing.
That last step is the one most people skip. Storing while damp creates the warm humid environment bacteria love.
What to never use
- Antibacterial dish soap with harsh fragrances — strips silicone over time and can irritate the body next use.
- Alcohol or rubbing alcohol — cracks silicone and degrades rubber, even though it's a disinfectant.
- Bleach — never. Not even diluted in most cases.
- The dishwasher — unless the toy explicitly says it's dishwasher-safe (almost none do).
- Boiling water — destroys the motor on any vibrating toy.
- Silicone lubricant on silicone toys — degrades the toy's surface. Use water-based.
For motorised toys
Keep the motor and the charging port dry.
- Don't submerge unless the box explicitly says "fully waterproof" (look for an IPX7 rating).
- Wipe the body, careful around the charging port.
- If the port gets wet, dry completely before plugging in.
"Splash-proof" and "shower-friendly" are not the same as fully waterproof. Read the rating.

Storage — the India-specific section
Indian humidity is brutal. Most "toy storage" advice from US or EU brands assumes 40% relative humidity. We routinely hit 80%.
What to do:
- Use a breathable cotton pouch, not a plastic bag. Plastic traps moisture and grows fungus. Every Tantrix order ships with one.
- Store somewhere dry, away from bathrooms and any rain-side wall.
- Add a small silica gel packet to the storage drawer — the kind that comes with new shoes. Replace every six months.
- Don't store toys touching each other. Different materials can react when in contact, especially in humidity.
- Avoid direct sunlight — UV degrades silicone and most plastic.
Charging cable care
Treat lithium batteries like phone batteries. Don't let them go completely flat, don't leave them at 100% for weeks. If you use a toy infrequently, charge to about 60% before storing.
When to replace a toy
Signs a toy needs to go:
- Cracks, even tiny ones, in the silicone — they harbor bacteria.
- A sticky or "weeping" surface texture — the material is breaking down.
- A persistent smell that doesn't wash out.
- The motor is inconsistent or noticeably weaker.
- The charging port won't hold a charge reliably.
A well-cared-for Tantrix toy should last three to five years of regular use. A neglected toy can fail in a year.
Why Tantrix designs for the India climate
We chose medical-grade silicone for Tantrix Sutra, Tantrix Moh, and Tantrix Kalaa specifically because it tolerates humidity and standard cleaning agents far better than the cheaper TPE used in many import devices. The included cotton storage pouch isn't packaging — it's part of the product care system.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use baby wipes to clean my toy?
Quick wipe in an emergency, sure. But alcohol and fragrance in many baby wipes aren't good for silicone over time. Water and mild soap is better.
How often should I deep-clean?
Beyond the basic after-use clean, inspect and deep-clean once a month. Look for cracks, sticky surfaces, smells. Catch issues early.
What if my toy stopped working?
If under warranty, return it. Tantrix warranty covers manufacturing defects for one year — message us through the Tantrix app or website. Out of warranty? It's almost always easier to replace than repair.
Can I share a toy with my partner?
Yes — with cleaning between uses, or by using a condom and changing it between users. The transmission risk for STIs and infections is real but manageable with care.
---
The unromantic truth: a clean, dry, well-stored toy lasts years and feels good every time. A neglected one becomes a health risk in months. The difference is about 90 seconds of care after each use.
